Chips, ice cream, cake & sausage

The Globe of Glossop

I recently enjoyed the chance to return to one of the best vegan food providers in the UK. The Globe pub in the northern town of Glossop is as near to a religious experience a vegan atheist can get. The cosy inn delivers plate after plate of cruelty-free comfort food and my only regret is that it isn’t situated closer to where I live.

That said, I must admit location is but a mild irritation. Distance exists only to be laughed at when a FGV is hungry and let’s face it, when am I not at least peckish? So grab your warmest coat and wrap up tightly… we are heading into the windy wilds of Derbyshire for a spot of overeating.

The Globe is a rare treat. It is a country-style pub in a small town run by some of the friendliest people you could hope to be served by, with an entirely vegan food menu. Yes, vegan.

The menu is crammed with traditional English pub fare including sausages, chips and gravy. Homemade ice cream is sold in gourmet flavours and there is always heavily-frosted cake waiting to be eaten. I started my meal with a Fry’s traditional sausage served on a stack of thick chips smothered in onion gravy. Josh would have been envious had he not ordered the ridiculously-delicious Mediterranean sausage casserole for himself. We were both extremely pleased with ourselves.

My hunger was somewhat sated by the above dishes, but a FGV can always get a little bit extra in. It was in this spirit that I decided to order a slice of chocolate cake accompanied by two scoops of homemade vegan ice cream.

The cake was simple yet delectable. The icing was just as I like it… almost too sugary to eat and as thick as a drag queen’s make up. The ice cream at The Globe is always sensational. The proprietors make it themselves and flavours include amaretto, hazelnut, coconut and many more.

I understand Glossop might seem a long way to go for a meal, but I can assure you it is well worth the frequent flyer miles. My first trip was less than a year ago and I can see myself getting back to their tasty fare served by friendly folk sooner rather than later.

That cake looks dangerously nice! I’ve never been anywhere near Glossop. Quite out of the way for me unfortunately.

  2. I want to go to there.

I visited The Globe a couple of weeks ago and loved it! It was packed, unsurprisingly. The prices were very reasonable, food delicious… I had a deluxe curry with tofu and fried rice. If it was nearby I would go there every week.
